For 25 years, TaeguTec India has evolved from a pioneering cutting-tool manufacturer into a strategic productivity partner for Indian industry. Built on localisation, application-driven engineering and continuous innovation, the company is now helping manufacturers meet the demands of high-speed, high-precision and sustainable production. As India emerges as a global manufacturing hub, TaeguTec India is gearing up to shape the next generation of machining excellence. Excerpts from an exclusive interview with L. Krishnan, Managing Director, TaeguTec India:

    Q. Looking back to 2000, what was the vision behind establishing the India operation, and how has that original vision evolved over the past quarter century?

When we began our journey 25 years ago, we were essentially a manufacturing start-up driven by a very bold ambition. Following the establishment of the TaeguTec brand under the IMC Group in 1998, we decided in 1999 that we must establish a strong, localized presence in India. Our objective was never driven by a capacity shortfall elsewhere; rather, it was rooted in two fundamental principles:

    • Demonstrating Long-Term Commitment: We wanted to send an unequivocal message to the Indian market that we were here for the long run, investing directly in the country’s manufacturing future.
    • Proximity for Engineered Solutions: Cutting tools in high-precision industries cannot simply be shipped off a shelf. Being physically close to the customer gives us a decisive proximity advantage, allowing us to understand customer pain points intimately and engineer customized solutions directly for their shop floors.

At a time when world-class manufacturing was predominantly associated with developed economies, we invested in building a state-of-the-art, fully air-conditioned manufacturing facility to global standards right here in Bengaluru. Many industry observers felt we were too ambitious or ahead of our time.

Over the past quarter-century, that vision has evolved from establishing a new brand into setting the benchmark for the entire industry. Backed by the global strength of the IMC Group and Berkshire Hathaway, we have transitioned from being an agile supplier of cutting tools to becoming an indispensable partner in customer productivity, component cost reduction, and engineering innovation.

    TaeguTec-India

    Q. What would you identify as the defining milestones in TaeguTec India’s 25-year journey—from being a cutting-tool supplier to becoming a partner in customers’ machining and productivity-improvement initiatives?

The defining milestones of our journey reflect both our operational growth and our technological maturity:

    • Inauguration of the Bengaluru Facility (24 August 2001): Establishing our Bommasandra manufacturing plant gave us the localized infrastructure to engineer, customize, and deliver tools with rapid turnaround times.
    • Emerging as an Industry Leader: Through relentless customer engagement and proven cost reduction on shop floors, we earned market trust and established a dominant market position within our first five years.
    • Founding our Dedicated Local R&D Center (2003): We established an in-house Indian R&D division to develop customized tooling specifically tailored to domestic machining conditions, many of which have subsequently been adopted across global markets.
    • Stringent Quality & Aerospace Certifications: Securing our AS9100 Rev D, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 certifications formally validated our systems for aerospace-grade precision, environmental stewardship, and occupational safety.
    • Periodic Technological Step-Changes: Beyond introducing thousands of incremental SKUs annually, we have consistently transformed shop-floor productivity through major innovation campaigns every 3 to 5 years—from our early TOP and Gold Rush lines to the high-feed, high-productivity breakthroughs of the SFEED-TEC and WIN-SFEED families.
    • Pioneering Resource Efficiency: Introducing compact, highly durable insert lines—such as our foundational Rhino geometries—demonstrated that smaller carbide inserts can deliver identical or superior rigidity and performance compared to bulky ISO inserts, eliminating material waste while drastically reducing tooling costs.

    Q. The Indian manufacturing industry has undergone a dramatic transformation over the last 25 years. How have customer expectations changed, and how has TaeguTec India adapted its products, technology and technical-support capabilities accordingly?

The Indian manufacturing mindset has matured remarkably. Twenty-five years ago, the domestic market was primarily price-sensitive, often evaluating a cutting tool solely on its initial purchase invoice. Today, Indian manufacturers are globally competitive, highly sophisticated, and strictly value-conscious. They evaluate tooling based on the total cost per component, cycle-time reduction, process predictability, and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).

Manufacturers recognize the true economics of the shop floor: Cutting tools account for only about 1% to 1.5% of the total manufacturing cost of a typical automotive or aerospace component. However, if a low-cost, unpredictable tool fails and causes machine downtime, the resulting financial loss across millions worth of CNC machinery is disproportionately catastrophic. Customers do not look for price arbitrage alone; they demand absolute supply chain predictability, application stability, and responsive service backup.

To adapt to these evolving demands, we have structured our engineering around a rigorous “Material x Operation” matrix. Rather than segregating solutions purely by sector, we analyze the specific machining operation against the workpiece material. We marry advanced metallurgy and coating technologies with optimized tool geometries to deliver predictable performance. Backing this technology is our extensive network of skilled technical engineers stationed across our regional branches, providing hands-on support directly at the spindle.

    Q. TaeguTec India serves demanding sectors such as automotive, aerospace, power generation and mould & die. Which industries are currently driving the strongest demand for advanced machining solutions, and what specific challenges are customers bringing to you?

We are currently witnessing robust demand across automotive, power generation, electric vehicles (EV), and miniature applications. The aerospace and medical sectors are also significant drivers, presenting unique challenges as they increasingly rely on difficult-to-machine materials like titanium and superalloys.

However, we do not view these challenges strictly by industry; we classify machining through our “Material x Operation” matrix. For example, machining titanium presents identical core metallurgical challenges whether the component is an aerospace turbine or a medical implant. Similarly, the EV transition has shifted supply chains. While EV transmission technologies are somewhat simpler than traditional internal combustion engines, manufacturers are now coming to us with challenges related to machining large, complex battery pack containers and electric motor casings.

Across all these applications, the persistent challenge is achieving precision and stability at very high speeds. We address these specific pain points by deploying advanced geometries—such as our high-feed SFEED-TEC and WIN-SFEED families. These solutions provide the exceptional chip evacuation, rigidity, and speed necessary to handle both lightweight EV components and tough aerospace alloys without compromising cycle times.

    Q. Your portfolio spans turning, milling, drilling, threading, tooling systems and solid carbide solutions. How important is the ability to offer complete or turnkey machining solutions in today’s competitive manufacturing environment?

Offering complete turnkey solutions is absolutely critical because it fundamentally de-risks our customers’ operations. As mentioned regarding the true economics of the shop floor, tooling may be a small percentage of overall cost, but tooling failure carries catastrophic financial risks.

Customers today do not want to piece together disparate tooling setups through trial and error; they seek predictable supply chains, absolute application stability, and exceptional service backup. Providing a turnkey solution allows us to step in early—often at the component design stage—and marry our core competency in material science and process metallurgy with highly specialized tool geometries. By engineering the entire tooling package from day one, we guarantee productivity, ensure a reliable supply chain, and protect the customer’s overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).

    TaeguTec-Cutting-Tool

    Q. How significant has localisation been to TaeguTec India’s success? Could you elaborate on the role of your Bengaluru manufacturing facility, local engineering capabilities and customised solutions in addressing the specific requirements of Indian manufacturers?

Localisation has been the bedrock of our success. When we established our facility in Bengaluru, it was not because we were short of manufacturing capacity in Korea. We came to India with two clear objectives: to demonstrate a long-term commitment to our Indian customers and to establish a vital proximity advantage.

This proximity is essential for delivering highly engineered, customized solutions. Since 2003, we have operated a dedicated Indian R&D center focused on analyzing domestic shop-floor realities and engineering specific solutions—many of which have proven so effective that they are subsequently adopted by our global network.

Furthermore, our local manufacturing footprint provides Indian industries with a highly predictable and secure supply chain. In a market where some competitors rely on the white-label import of commoditized tools to win on price arbitrage alone, our localized engineering and rapid service response position us not just as a supplier, but as a reliable, long-term productivity partner.

    Q. Productivity is no longer measured simply by tool life or cutting speed; manufacturers are increasingly looking at total cost per component, machine utilisation, energy consumption and sustainability. How is TaeguTec helping customers optimise the economics of machining beyond the cutting tool itself?

Our core objective has always been to help the customer reduce the true cost of manufacturing. True productivity encompasses the entire shop floor ecosystem, meaning we actively work with customers to optimize their material utilization and operational energy consumption.

For instance, we strongly recommend that manufacturers right-size their cutting tools. We often see situations where a bulky 12-millimeter insert is used for an application requiring only a 2-millimeter depth of cut, resulting in a massive waste of critical carbide. By offering product lines like our Rhino geometries—which deliver exceptional rigidity and performance using significantly smaller inserts—we eliminate this waste. Furthermore, we ensure our tooling technologies fully support our customers’ process transformations, providing high-performance solutions regardless of whether they choose to run traditional wet operations or adopt eco-friendly dry machining.

    Q. With digitalisation, automation, difficult-to-machine materials and increasingly sophisticated CNC equipment reshaping metal cutting, what technological developments do you believe will have the greatest impact on cutting tools over the next five to ten years?

Manufacturing is entering a thrilling new era powered by digital technologies, advanced automation, and continuous innovation. From a digitalization standpoint, the greatest impact will come from seamlessly integrating tooling data into the customer’s own digital transformation journey. We are highly focused on enabling our customers’ smart factories by providing accessible 3D digital tool models, real-time supply chain integration with our warehouses, and digitized cutting parameters.

From a process perspective, the evolution of near-net manufacturing methods—like advanced forging and 3D printing—will not replace precision machining, but rather create new, niche finish-machining opportunities that demand highly specialized tooling. Furthermore, as aerospace and EV sectors introduce new, difficult-to-machine alloys, the defining technological advantage will be a cutting tool manufacturer’s ability to rapidly marry advanced metallurgical science with innovative geometries to run at unprecedented feeds and speeds.

    Q. Sustainability is becoming an important consideration for manufacturing companies. TaeguTec India has undertaken initiatives including rainwater harvesting, water conservation, green-energy adoption and a Miyawaki forest. How do you see sustainability becoming part of the company’s manufacturing and business strategy?

We have always believed that industrial progress must go hand-in-hand with environmental responsibility. These green initiatives are not peripheral corporate social responsibility projects; they are direct reflections of our core values and are fully integrated into our operations. We take immense pride that 98% of our energy consumption now comes from renewable sources. Through extensive rainwater harvesting and zero liquid discharge systems, we have made our facility virtually water-independent, completely eliminating our reliance on external water purchases. We have also cultivated a thriving Miyawaki forest to give back to nature.

From a business and product strategy perspective, sustainability is equally critical. Tungsten is a highly strategic and scarce mineral. To secure our supply chain and promote industrial circularity, we are deeply invested in recycling used tungsten carbide from the market, recovering high-purity material, and reducing the global dependency on virgin ore. This voluntary commitment to sustainability ensures we are prepared for a future where embedded carbon and responsible manufacturing define industry leadership.

    Q. TaeguTec India emphasises innovation, performance excellence, collaboration and trust. How do these values translate into day-to-day engagement with customers, distributors and your own employees?

Our values are not merely corporate slogans; they are the governing principles of our daily operations. When it comes to our people, we firmly believe that an organization succeeds only when its people succeed. This translates into action through our continuous Graduate and Diploma Engineer Trainee (GET/DET) programs and paid internships—initiatives we have maintained for over two decades to nurture hundreds of highly skilled professionals for the high-tech manufacturing sector. For our employees, we actively invest in creating a workplace culture of belonging, celebration, and care, demonstrating that we value people as much as we value performance.

Externally, collaboration and trust define our ecosystem. We view our suppliers and regional distributors as extended families who have grown alongside us. For our customers, trust is built on consistency and predictability. Our application engineers are on shop floors every day, providing hands-on consultative support to ensure our customers’ machines never stop running. This proactive, problem-solving engagement is the true daily manifestation of performance excellence.

    Q. India is increasingly being positioned as a global manufacturing hub. What opportunities do you see for TaeguTec India as Indian companies expand their manufacturing capabilities and global supply-chain presence?

As India transitions from being a cost-advantage destination to a sophisticated global manufacturing hub, domestic companies are aggressively expanding into high-value supply chains across aerospace, defense, and EV sectors. This shift presents an immense opportunity. To compete at a global level, Indian manufacturers cannot rely on fragile, commoditized supply chains; they require absolute process stability, zero defects, and high predictability.

Our localized manufacturing footprint and dedicated Indian R&D capabilities position us perfectly as the strategic enabler for this transition. As domestic companies invest heavily in highly sophisticated multi-axis CNC machines and near-net manufacturing methods, they need advanced cutting tools capable of maximizing these expensive assets. By providing world-class, custom-engineered tooling straight out of Bengaluru—backed by rapid, localized availability—we ensure that Indian manufacturers can confidently integrate into global supply chains without the risk of debilitating supply disruptions.

    Q. As you close the first 25 years and look towards the next 25, what are the three or four strategic priorities that will define TaeguTec India’s next phase of growth-and what would you like the company to be known for when it reaches its Golden Jubilee?

If our first 25 years were about proving what is possible in Indian manufacturing, our journey toward our Golden Jubilee will be about redefining what is possible. Moving forward, our next phase of growth will be driven by four strategic priorities, adapting to the evolving needs of our customers while keeping our core founding values close to our heart:

    1. Advancing Local Engineering and R&D: We will continuously adapt, digging deeper to engineer the exact right solution for increasingly complex materials and tighter engineering tolerances right here in India.

    2. Nurturing the Talent Pipeline: The world is changing rapidly, and we will aggressively continue to invest in our people. By maintaining robust training, upskilling, and mentorship programs, we will build the next generation of innovators who will lead the industry forward.

    3. Sustainable Operations & Circularity: We will push beyond our current renewable energy and zero-liquid-discharge milestones. We are prioritizing the expansion of our tungsten recycling capabilities to secure critical supply chains and lead the industry in responsible, circular manufacturing.

Ultimately, when TaeguTec India reaches its Golden Jubilee, the company should be known not just for its market share or financial returns, but for the immense societal and industrial value it has created. The company should continue to be recognized as a deeply trusted partner that never stopped innovating for its customers and always contributed positively to the community.
