FACCIN Group’s Cutting-Edge solutions for metal truck tank manufacturing

Article by Donatella Fumagalli – FACCIN Group’s Marketing Manager

From raw material to form-readyMetal truck tanks are an essential component of industries such as transportation, construction, and agriculture. These sturdy containers are designed to transport and store various types of liquids, including fuel, chemicals, and water. The manufacturing process of metal truck tanks involves precision engineering and the use of different types of metals.

When it comes to constructing metal truck tanks, there are several types of metals that are commonly used. These include carbon steel, aluminium alloy, stainless steel, and mild steel. Each type of metal offers its own unique set of properties and benefits, making it suitable for different applications.

Carbon steel is highly durable, known for its strength and ability to handle heavy loads even in harsh conditions. On the other hand, aluminium alloy tanks provide both lightness and strength, with a high strength-to-weight ratio. On the contrary, stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion and can endure extreme temperatures and harsh chemicals. It is commonly used in industries like food and beverage where hygiene is vital. Finally, the mild steel, also known as low carbon steel, offers good strength and affordability, making it a popular choice for tanks that do not require high corrosion resistance such as water and dry goods.

The Manufacturing Process of Metal Truck Tanks

The manufacturing process of metal truck tanks involves several steps to ensure the final product is safe and reliable. These steps include:

    • Design and Engineering: factors such as capacity, dimensions, material selection, and safety regulations are considered.
    • Material Preparation and Tank Forming: involves cutting, shaping, and forming the selected metal sheets into the desired tank shape.
    • Welding and Joining: the metal sheets are then welded or joined together using specialized techniques, such as TIG or MIG welding.
    • Surface Treatment: after the tank is assembled, it undergoes surface treatment to enhance its corrosion resistance.
    • Installation of Accessories: various accessories, such as valves, vents, and fittings, are installed onto the tank to allow for easy filling, draining, and measurement of the liquid contents.
    • Final Inspection and Testing: this includes pressure testing, leak detection, and quality assurance checks to ensure the tank meets industry standards and regulations.

Tank Forming with FACCIN Group’s Solutions

With formidable industry-leading brands – Faccin®, Boldrini®, and Roundo® – under its umbrella, the FACCIN Group offers an extensive range of cutting-edge metal forming solutions meticulously tailored to cater to the diverse requirements of truck tank manufacturers.

The manufacturing involves an important step known as tank forming. Recognizing the significance of this process, the Group, with the assistance of its dedicated R&D department, has designed various cutting-edge rolling and forming machines. These innovative solutions effectively streamline the truck tank manufacturing process.

    • Faccin® 4-roll Plate Rolling Machine to roll up to 12 m plate width: 4-roll plate bending machines, with linear or planetary guides, are the perfect rolling solution for the construction of truck tanks. Faccin® 4HEL and 4HEP series guarantee greater productivity as they are fast and precise besides being easy to use. The four roll plate rolls are the ideal solution for mass production, high volumes, repetitive production in an automatic cycle. All models can be fully equipped with cutting-edge accessories and Siemens CNCs to ensure 24/7 productivity.
    • Fully Automated Plate Rolling Lines designed to maximize fuel tank productivity. Faccin® cutting-edge working line is a game-changer in the industry, featuring an advanced 4-roll plate rolling machine equipped with Siemens CNC-PGS technology for precision and control. Enhancing efficiency further, the line includes a plate loader with a vacuum system, an automatic feeding table with a customized plate flipping system, and a comprehensive safety system with an area laser scanner to prioritize the safety of the workforce. In addition, the rolling line includes a plate separator, a top support with an integrated ferule ejector, and a conveyor leading to the welding station.

Furthermore, FACCIN Group provides forming solutions that precisely cater to the manufacturing requirements of circular, oval and polycentric heads. These heads are integral components in the fabrication of metal tanks.

    • The group provides a wide range of Boldrini® and Faccin® automated dishing presses with manipulators and flanging machines, designed to meet the diverse needs of truck tanks manufacturers. The machines possess remarkable capabilities, with the ability to handle head thicknesses ranging from 2mm to over 80mm in cold forming and up to 100mm in hot forming. These machines effortlessly manufacture circular heads, which are essential components of truck tanks. Moreover, they are capable of producing hemispherical heads, torispherical heads, and ellipsoidal heads with utmost precision.
    • Faccin® PPH hydroforming press is an essential machine for manufacturing steel, stainless steel, and aluminium dished tank heads. These hydroforming machines are in high demand for truck tank production as they enable the hydroforming process in a multitude of shapes, including circular, oval, and polycentric. The PPH series are renowned for their unrivalled productivity and unwavering reliability, excelling in forming plates up to 8 mm thick.

To complete the truck tank manufacturing process the group provides advanced Roundo® and Faccin® Angle Rolls that are specifically designed for T or Omega profile bending. These profiles play a critical role in reinforcing the tanks, ensuring their durability and strength.
