Many people refrain from using ceramic inserts because of two main reasons: High Price: The price per cutting edge of a Ceramic insert is about 2-3 times higher when compared to a carbide insert with the same shape and size. Technical challenges: Ceramic inserts are sensitive to breakages when not applied correctly. However, when used professionally, ceramic inserts enable a dramatic boost in cutting speeds and, as a result, shorter cycle times and lower production costs. In most cases, carbide inserts are the best solution for a turning application since they offer an excellent balance between performance and cost. However, there are…
Sustainable engineering is not just good for the environment, it also improves capital and operational efficiency, which brings financial gains, highlights Amish Sabharwal, Executive Vice President, Engineering Business Unit, AVEVA. COP26 saw the world’s nations come together and make new environmental pledges, including a US-China agreement to boost cooperation in combating climate change, India’s pledge to achieve net zero by 2070 and 23 countries committing to phasing out coal. However, we all know that it will take more than government pledges to keep the global temperature rise below 1.50C. Industry has a key role to play in fighting climate change,…

A sliding table panel saw has been well utilised since it was installed late last year at Vesconite Bearings’ warehouse in Johannesburg. The saw has mainly been used to cut Vesconite and Ultrablack wear plates that are used in a range of wear applications. The introduction of the machine means the Johannesburg warehouse can dispatch cut-to-size orders quickly, reducing the longer lead times of having plates cut at the company’s busy factory. Vesconite stores manager Martin Nyathi informs that a large number of plates and strips have been accurately cut on the machine and expects the saw to be a…

No one would argue against traditional prototyping being a bottleneck in the PCB development and design process. Furthermore, depending on what’s happening with the market, such as materials shortages, that process can end up being delayed quite easily. This can set a project back weeks or even months, snowballing into a major problem, especially when you have customers waiting for new components or products. Of course, there are a few other reasons for the time delays. For example, manufacturers don’t generally take smaller orders; you must do so in bulk, and if they do honor small projects, they’ll deprioritize, extending…
